You probably know the feeling... You're happily working on a fun latex outfit... almost finished... just need to add a cute little trim. But then you realize – oh no – you’ve run out of latex strips! Or they’re just the wrong width, or not quite the right color! So frustrating!
No worries, you think... I’ll just quickly order some at www.LatexRepair.nl...
But guess what? Sold out!!
Now what??
► Why are latex strips so handy when making latex clothing?
Perfect finish:
They provide a professional finish that makes your homemade garment look neat and tidy. And it adds more strength to a garment.
Repairs and reinforcements:
Latex can tear, especially in areas that experience a lot of "stress" like seams, sleeves, crotch, armpits or the waistband etc. Latex strips are perfect for quick repairs.
Decoration:
Strips can also be used purely decoratively. Think of contrasting colors along the edges of a latex dress, or geometric patterns created with strips. They add a professional, industrial look to any design.
► Why make them yourself?
Cost savings:
Pre-cut latex strips can be quite expensive, especially if you need them in large quantities. By making them yourself from larger latex material, you can save significantly on your material costs.
Custom sizing:
Commercial strips often come in standard widths and lengths. By making them yourself, you can create exactly the dimensions your project requires - from super thin strips for delicate work to wide bands for structural support. And with a rotary cutter with a wavy or serrated blade, you can make the coolest strips!
Material control:
You can decide for yourself what quality and thickness of latex to use. For different applications you need different properties - thinner material for flexible connections, thicker material for sturdy constructions.
Color consistency:
By cutting strips from the same latex as your main project, you guarantee a perfect color match. This is especially important for projects where the strips are visible.
Availability:
Nothing is more frustrating than discovering halfway through a project that your specific strips are sold out. By making your own supply, you're always prepared.
The quality of homemade strips:
With the right technique and tools, homemade latex strips can be just as good as, or even better than, commercial alternatives. The key lies in using a sharp rotary cutter (always use a new blade - 45 or 60 mm diameter) and a stable clean cutting mat. This ensures straight, smooth edges without fraying or irregularities that could affect quality.
► Tips!
Storage:
Store cut strips with some talcum powder between them to prevent sticking.
Planning:
Always cut some extra strips - it's better to have too many than too few!
